Description
An attractive pair of antique French field binoculars, probably dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, approximately c.1900–1920.
These traditional Galilean-style field glasses feature 40mm objective lenses, black metal fittings, textured dark leather-covered barrels, shaped eyecups and a central focusing mechanism.
The underside of the eyepiece bridge is clearly stamped “MADE IN FRANCE”. No manufacturer’s name or magnification marking has been identified.
The central focusing column has a graduated scale marked 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, believed to be a focusing-distance scale rather than a magnification adjustment.
The lenses are intact, and the internal lenses have been lightly cleaned. The central focusing mechanism works well.
Cosmetically, the binoculars show considerable age-related wear, including rubbing, scratches, paint loss and worn patches on the leather covering. They retain an attractive original antique appearance.
