Description
This is an antique / vintage pair of Schütz Ruf & Co. Kassel “Soclar” 8×56 binoculars, made in Germany.
These are a large and impressive early German Porro prism binocular. Based on the maker’s history and the markings, they likely date from the late 1920s to 1930s, most likely around the 1930s.
The optics are intact and clean, and the binoculars produce very clear images when viewed through. Central and eyepiece focusing mechanisms work well, and binoculars open/close smoothly. They are a very usable pair despite their age.
Cosmetically, there are age-related signs of use, including paint wear, scuffs, and finish loss to the body and lens surrounds, as shown in the photos. The brown textured leather body covering remains complete and gives the binoculars a distinctive vintage appearance. The leather neck strap is attached.
