Description
Antique French “Jumelles Nationales” field / marine binoculars with built-in compass and original carrying case, dating from approximately the early 20th century.
A particularly attractive pair of large-objective Galilean-style binoculars, featuring leather-covered extending barrels, central focusing, brass-coloured trim and a small working compass mounted between the objective lenses.
The gilt script on the eyepiece barrels appears to read:
“Jumelles Nationales” and “Marine et Théâtre”
The binoculars have approximately 40 mm objective lenses, giving them considerably larger light-gathering lenses than typical small opera glasses of the period.

Optical condition:
The optics are intact and clean for their age. The binoculars have been tested and produce a clear image.
The central compass is also working.
The focusing mechanism operates as intended.
Cosmetic condition:
There is age-related wear to the leather covering, including rubbing, small losses and surface marks. The black finish and eyepiece rims also show scratches, rubbing and areas of wear consistent with age and use.
The original carrying case is included and shows wear, distortion and deterioration associated with age. Please see all photographs for further details.
A very attractive early optical instrument, particularly interesting due to its large objective lenses, built-in compass and surviving gilt inscriptions.
