Description
A very attractive pair of antique Dollond London field glasses / binoculars, with black metal construction and stitched brown leather-covered barrels.
The eyepiece barrels are marked “ARMY GLASS”, while the eyepieces are marked “DOLLOND LONDON”. The bridge is marked:
x5
2 7/16″
The objective lenses measure approximately 45mm diameter.
The optics are intact and the binoculars produce a clear image. The central focusing wheel operates smoothly and works well.
These have considerable age-related cosmetic wear, including rubbing and paint loss to the black metalwork and wear to the leather covering, all consistent with their age and clearly shown in the photographs.
An almost identical Dollond example held by an optometry museum is described as a c.1895 Galilean field glass, also marked x5 and 2 7/16″, so these appear to date from around the late Victorian / turn-of-the-century period. Cyril Kett Optometry Museum
A superb display piece for a collector of antique optical instruments, military-related field glasses, Victorian scientific instruments or Dollond memorabilia.
