Description
Antique brass 3-draw pocket telescope / spyglass, probably dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
This compact telescope features a traditional brass construction with multiple extending draw tubes and an attractive red-brown mahogany central grip section. The objective end incorporates an extendable brass sunshade, an interesting and practical feature commonly found on better-quality period telescopes.
Objective lens diameter: approximately 25mm.
The telescope collapses to a compact size (145mm) for carrying and extends to a considerably greater length (400mm) for use. The scope weight is about 228 g
Optical condition:
All optics are intact and clean for their age. The telescope has been tested and achieves a clear image for its age. As with most antique optical instruments, there may be very minor dust or age-related marks internally, but nothing significant was observed during normal use.
Mechanical condition:
The brass draw tubes extend and retract as intended, and the objective sunshade also extends correctly. The rotating cover of the eyepiece also works well.
Cosmetic condition:
The brass shows an attractive aged patina with surface marks, tarnishing and general wear consistent with its age and use. The red-brown mahogany grip section also shows some minor age-related surface wear. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
No obvious maker’s name or identifying engraving has been found, so the exact manufacturer and date are unknown. Based on its style and construction, it is believed to date from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century.
