Description

Antique French 8 Verres Field Glasses Binoculars – 40mm Brass & Leather – c.1900

An attractive pair of antique French field glasses, believed to date from approximately 1890–1920.

The eyepiece bridge is stamped “8 VERRES”, meaning eight lenses in French. These traditional Galilean-style binoculars feature brass and nickel-coloured metal fittings, dark leather-covered barrels and a central focusing mechanism.

Main Features:

  • Type: Antique French field glasses / binoculars
  • Markings: 8 VERRES
  • Origin: France
  • Period: Estimated c.1890–1920
  • Objective lens diameter: 40mm
  • Eyepiece diameter: 13mm
  • Magnification: Unmarked, probably approximately 3x–4x
  • Construction: Brass and metal with dark leather covering
  • Size: 115mm (W) x 80mm (H) x 52mm (D)
  • Weight: 412 g

Condition:

Used antique condition, showing considerable age-related wear, tarnishing, scratches, worn leather covering and areas of verdigris on the metal fittings.

There are some dents and deformation around the edge of one eyepiece ring, as shown in the photographs.

The lenses appear intact without damage, and the internal lenses have been lightly cleaned. There appears to be a small amount of transparent adhesive residue around the edge of one eyepiece lens. However, this does not appear to affect the image when viewing through the binoculars.

The central bridge screw is a replacement rather than the original fitting.

A characterful pair of early French binoculars, suitable for collectors of antique optical instruments and historical field glasses.
