Description
Antique Cary “The Pilot” binocular / field glasses, dating approximately to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910.
The eyepiece surrounds are marked:
“CARY OPTICIAN TO THE ADMIRALTY – LONDON”
and the centre bridge carries the model name: “THE PILOT”.
Cary was a well-known London maker and supplier of optical, scientific and nautical instruments, with a long association with maritime and Admiralty equipment.
These are substantial traditional Galilean-style field glasses with central focusing. The optics are intact and clean and the central focusing mechanism operates correctly. They produce a usable image.
The binoculars retain an attractive aged black/brass finish with considerable genuine surface wear, rubbing and loss to the original finish consistent with their age.
A particularly interesting pair for a collector of antique binoculars, maritime optics, scientific instruments or Cary of London equipment.
