Markings visible on the binoculars:

H. Hughes & Son Ltd London
HUSUN
The Liverpool
No. 15072

H. Hughes & Son was a well-known British maker of nautical, optical and scientific instruments. The company was founded in 1828, became H. Hughes & Son Ltd in 1903, and later became part of Kelvin & Hughes in 1947. The HUSUN name was used on Hughes instruments, with Science Museum records showing Husun-marked instruments from around 1920, while period references also mention Husun marine binoculars marked “The Liverpool” by 1937. Based on the markings and construction, these binoculars are most likely circa 1920s–1930s.

Main Features:

  • Model: H. Hughes & Son Ltd binoculars
  • Objective lens diameter: 56mm
  • Eyepiece diameter: 24mm
  • Central focusing wheel
  • Size: 125mm (W) x 120mm (H) x 64mm (D)
  • Weight: 870 g
  • A leather neck strap is attached

Condition Note:

The binoculars are in good antique used condition overall, with expected age-related wear to the exterior. The black lacquer finish shows some surface marks, scuffs and light wear, especially around the rims and metal edges. The textured body covering is present and gives the binoculars a nice vintage appearance. The leather neck strap is included and shows age/wear.

The optics are very clean, and the binoculars achieve bright and clear images. There is a visible line on one eyepiece glass, shown in the photos, but this does not seem to affect normal use or the image quality when looking through the binoculars.

A very nice collectible pair of antique British field glasses, suitable for display, collection, maritime/nautical interest, theatre/opera use, or vintage optical collecting.

Please see all photos for the exact cosmetic condition and markings.
